MARTIN LUTHER KING
(Born) January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968 (Assassinated)
- On July 4, 1965, Martin Luther King, Jr. gave an Independence Day speech.
(This will be the day when all of the chosen black men and white men, Jews and gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we are free at last.”)

- July 17. Congress allowed the enlistment of blacks in the Union Army.
Some black units precede this date, but they were disbanded as unofficial. Some 186,000 blacks served; of these 38,000 died.
- July. Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery.
She would return South at least twenty times, leading over 300 slaves to freedom.
- In 1852, Frederick Douglass famously commemorated the signing of the Declaration of Independence yet mixed cutting irony with patriotic sentiments in the hope of evoking change.
“What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?,” Douglass asked the packed hall of white abolitionists. “I answer,” he continued: It is “a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless.”A Peoples Journey, A Nation’s Story
