Irma Makes Another Landfall In Florida, Scaling The West Coast

Large waves produced by Hurricane Irma crash into the end of a pier Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. At the same time this photo was being taken, the hurricane was making landfall in the Florida Keys as a Category 4 Storm.

As the eye hovers over Fort Myers, Hurricane Irma has weakened to a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 mph, more than an hour after it made landfall for a second time Sunday. The storm touched land again as a Category 3, hitting Marco Island on Florida’s southwest coast, after it plowed through the Florida Keys as a Category 4 earlier in the day.
“The interaction with the Florida Peninsula along with strong southwesterly shear should cause significant weakening, but Irma’s large and powerful circulation will likely maintain hurricane strength until Monday morning at the earliest,” according to the National Hurricane Center’s latest forecast.
